Aechmea orlandiana ’Ensign’

The Aechmea orlandiana 'Ensign'. This was one of the first $100 bromeliads back in the 1970s when it was first introduced, and it remains a highly coveted plant today.

A strikingly variegated form of Aechmea orlandiana, 'Ensign' features bold, candy-striped foliage in vibrant pink, creamy white, and green. The plant is a vegetative sport that originated in Moir's Hawaiian garden. When stressed sufficiently, reddish crossbands contrast with the creamy-white foliage sections, and it can develop a beautiful pink flush in strong light.

Care Instructions: Provide bright, filtered light for optimal growth and to encourage the pink flush and reddish crossbands. It can tolerate some direct sun if acclimated gradually, but avoid harsh, scorching afternoon rays which can burn the leaves. Keep the central cup of the rosette filled with fresh water. Water the soil or medium when it feels dry to the touch. This plant prefers to grow on the dry side with no wet feet, so ensure excellent drainage. Change the water in the tank regularly to prevent stagnation. Reduce watering in winter.
