Begonia maculata, a true icon of the houseplant world. Native to the rainforests of southeast Brazil, this species is a member of the cane-type begonias, known for their upright, bamboo-like stems and striking foliage.

The plant’s most distinguishing feature is its unique, angel-wing shaped leaves. Each olive-green leaf is a work of art, asymmetrical in shape with a heart-shaped base and covered in eye-catching silvery-white spots. The real showstopper is revealed when you look beneath the foliage: the undersides are a rich, vibrant burgundy or maroon red, providing a stunning contrast. Young leaves often emerge with a beautiful pinkish-red hue. As a cane begonia, it has a multi-stemmed, upright growth habit with distinct, ringed nodes that resemble bamboo joints.

In the summer, this plant rewards its caretaker with pendulous clusters of white or pale pink flowers. This exotic-looking plant is easy to grow and maintain, making it a perfect choice for both beginners and seasoned collectors.

Care Instructions: Provide bright, indirect light for the best growth and to enhance the leaf spots and color. An east- or west-facing window is ideal. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top 1-3 inches of soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure your pot has excellent drainage to prevent root rot; the plant will not tolerate standing water. In general, you should expect to water about once or twice a week.
