Jatropha podagrica

Jatropha podagrica. Native to the tropical Americas and southern Mexico, this fascinating plant is grown worldwide for its unusual appearance and mature caudex development.

The most captivating feature of the Buddha Belly Plant is its grey-green, bottle-shaped, and knobby trunk (caudex) that serves as a water reservoir. From the top of this swollen base, large, leathery, shield-shaped, 3-5 lobed leaves emerge, creating a beautiful tropical umbrella-like canopy. The leaves can reach up to 6 inches across in the sun and double in size in the shade. Adding to its allure, the plant produces stunning, long-lasting clusters of bright scarlet-orange, coral-like flowers with yellow anthers, blooming on and off throughout the year, even into winter after the leaves have dropped.

After flowering, the plant develops oval green seed capsules that mature to brown and explode, launching seeds several feet away. This fascinating natural phenomenon makes it a great conversation starter.

Care Instructions: Provide full sun to bright, filtered light for the best growth and flowering. It will thrive in a south, east, or west-facing window. Water moderately during the growing season and allow the soil to dry out between waterings. This plant is drought-tolerant and will not tolerate standing water. Reduce watering significantly in the autumn and winter when the plant is dormant and may drop its leaves. For a mature plant, this may mean watering only once a month during winter.
