Maranta leuconeura ‘Red’

Native to the tropical rainforests of Brazil, this rhizomatous perennial is celebrated for its foliage: broadly elliptical, dark olive-green leaves featuring a herringbone pattern of bright red midrib and veins, accented by a bright green central zone and light green splashes along the midrib.

What truly sets this plant apart is its fascinating nyctinastic behavior. Each evening, the leaves fold upward like hands in prayer—a movement controlled by internal circadian rhythms—before opening again at dawn. This "prayer" motion, combined with the deep purple-red undersides revealed when the leaves lift, makes this plant a joy to observe daily.

The Red Prayer Plant is a compact, clump-forming grower that typically reaches 30–50 cm (12–20 inches) tall and wide. Its naturally cascading habit makes it ideal for hanging baskets, shelves, or as a tabletop specimen where its colorful foliage can be admired from every angle.

Care Instructions: Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth and vibrant foliage color. An east- or north-facing window is ideal. It can tolerate low light but may become leggy. Keep the potting soil evenly moist throughout the growing season. Water when the top 1–2 inches of soil feels dry to the touch. During winter, allow the soil to dry out slightly more between waterings.
