Neoregelia ‘Heat Wave’ (N. carolinae x N. fluminensis)

Neoregelia ‘Heat Wave’. This exceptional bromeliad is an early hybrid from the renowned breeder Chester Skotak, created in the 1990s. It is a complex cross of Neoregelia carolinae × Neoregelia fluminensis, then crossed again with Neoregelia fluminensis, resulting in a compact, colorful plant that is greater than the sum of its parts.

‘Heat Wave’ forms a loose, open rosette with narrow, bronze-green leaves that are marginated in cream. A faint background of red speckles and an overall red wash give the foliage a warm, glowing quality. When grown in bright light, the entire plant flushes a stunning candy pink, and the central nest blushes fiery scarlet when it comes into bloom—a spectacular transformation that gives this plant its name.

As a Mini Neoregelia, ‘Heat Wave’ stays compact, typically reaching around 12 inches in diameter at maturity. This makes it an excellent choice for terrariums, small tabletops, and mixed tropical arrangements where its vivid colors can be appreciated up close. It is an easy-care, low-maintenance bromeliad that thrives with minimal attention.
