This is what happens when you stop putting bromeliads in pots. A mini Neoregelia, mounted with soil and moss onto a piece of natural grapewood, growing the way bromeliads actually grow in the wild—attached to something, at an angle, in the air. The result is less like a houseplant and more like a small living sculpture that happens to be sitting on your shelf.
The grapewood does half the work. These are real California grapevine pieces, harvested, cut, tumbled, and sandblasted to reveal the grain underneath. They twist, they knot, they fork. Some are short and dense, some are long and reaching. No two pieces are alike, and the length and shape you receive will be its own—which is exactly the point. You're not buying a standardized product; you're buying one specific piece of wood with a living plant attached to it.
The plant itself is a mini Neoregelia—a compact tank bromeliad prized for its colorful foliage and its habit of blushing dramatically at the center when it comes into bloom. Mounted with soil and moss at the base, it has what it needs to establish and thrive on the wood rather than in a pot.
Two ways to buy:
· Grower's Choice — $28.95. Our grower selects the grapewood piece and the mini Neoregelia to pair with it. You'll receive a beautiful, ready-to-display mount with both elements chosen for balance and color. This is the option for anyone who trusts the process and likes a surprise.
· Customer-Selected — $32.95. You choose the exact plant. We'll show you what's available, you pick the one you want, and we mount it on the grapewood piece. This is the option for collectors who know what they're looking for—a specific cultivar, a specific color, or a specific plant shape.
Good to Know:
· The wood varies. Length, shape, thickness, and grain will differ from piece to piece. Photographs show examples, not the exact item you'll receive—unless you've selected a specific plant through the Customer-Selected option.
· The plant varies. Mini Neoregelia cultivars available will change with our stock. Grower's Choice means we pick; Customer-Selected means you do.
· Soil and moss are part of the mount. This is not a bare-root mount. The base contains soil and moss to support establishment, which means it holds more moisture than a bare mount—and needs slightly more careful watering as a result.
· The mother plant will eventually pup. Like all bromeliads, a Neoregelia blooms once, then produces offsets ("pups") before the original rosette gradually declines. The pups can be left to cluster on the wood or removed and mounted separately.
· Grapewood may lighten or darken over time. This is normal as the wood ages and cycles through wet and dry.
Caring for Your Mount:
Bright, filtered light. Mini Neoregelias develop their strongest color in good light—a bright windowsill or a spot with dappled sun is ideal. Avoid harsh, direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. Keep the central "cup" of the rosette filled with fresh water. Refresh it weekly to prevent stagnation. Use rainwater or distilled water if your tap water is hard or heavily treated. The soil-and-moss base should be kept moist but never soggy. This is the main difference between a mounted Neoregelia and a potted one—you can't rely on a drainage hole. Water the base lightly and let it dry somewhat between waterings. If the moss stays wet for days at a time, you're overwatering.
