Monstera deliciosa

Transform your home into a tropical oasis with the Monstera deliciosa, one of the world's most recognizable and beloved houseplants. Native to the tropical forests of Mexico and Central America, this vigorous evergreen climber is admired for its bold, sculptural foliage.

As the plant matures, its large, glossy, deep green leaves develop characteristic natural holes (fenestrations) and deep splits (pinnatifid lobes). This adaptation is thought to help the leaves withstand strong winds and allow light to reach the lower foliage in the dense rainforest understory. Individual leaves can reach up to 90 cm (3 feet) in length under ideal conditions.

In its native habitat, Monstera deliciosa climbs up trees using long, tentacle-like aerial roots, reaching heights of up to 20 meters or more. Indoors, it typically grows to 6 to 8 feet tall, though it can be kept more compact with pruning. Train its aerial roots up a moss pole or trellis for support, mimicking its natural growth habit.

Also known as the "fruit salad plant," mature specimens grown in optimal conditions can produce a white calla lily-like flower, followed by a cone-like cream fruit. The edible fruit is said to taste like a cross between banana, pineapple, and mango. This fast-growing plant can put on one to two feet of new growth per year, reaching full size in about three years.

Care Instructions: Provide bright, indirect light for optimal growth. An east- or north-facing window is ideal. It can tolerate some direct morning sun, but avoid harsh, direct afternoon sunlight, which can scorch the leaves. Water thoroughly, then allow the top 2.5 to 5 cm (1 to 2 inches) of soil to dry out between waterings. Check the soil by inserting your finger into the topsoil. Reduce watering frequency in winter, allowing the soil to dry more between waterings.
