Platycerium 'Foong SiQi' (Staghorn fern)

Add a touch of whimsy and a story of love to your collection with the Platycerium 'Foong SiQi'. This rare and captivating staghorn fern is the creation of a famous Malaysian breeder, affectionately known as Mr. Foong, who first introduced this cultivar on Facebook on April 20, 2014. He named this beautiful plant after his granddaughter, giving it the name Foong SiQi, which translates in the plant world to "Curly Curly Deer" in Chinese trade. Every time its name is spoken, it's a tribute to that familial love. 

This hybrid is a "multi-eyed" (multi-bud) staghorn fern, believed by many in the community to be a cross between the Java Platycerium willinckii and a Bifurcatum staghorn fern. It has inherited the best traits for both assumed parents: a beautiful jagged crown from one, and the iconic, drooping fertile fronds from the other.

Its most defining feature is the spectacular, curly fertile fronds. As the plant matures and produces spores at the tips of these fronds, they begin to curl into tight, whimsical spirals that look like permed hair or springy coils, giving the plant is beloved "Curly" nickname. The fern is quite adaptable and robust, making it a rewarding project for the intermediate grower.
