This rare endemic species from the coastal regions of Colima and Jalisco in western Mexico represents one of the true collector's gems in the Tillandsia world. Once thought lost to botany until its rediscovery in the 1980s, we're proud to offer this extraordinary epiphyte that combines exquisite form with fascinating botanical history.

Key Features:

  • Distinctive pseudobulbous base measuring 2-2.5cm in diameter, creating an elegant vase-like structure
  • Curly, leathery leaves that elegantly recurve and twist, giving it the appearance of a miniature T. streptophylla
  • Dense covering of silvery-white trichomes that create a frosted, velvety texture
  • Vibrant violet to magenta tubular flowers that emerge nestled within the rosette
  • Compact size of only 7-8cm tall (excluding longer leaves) makes it perfect for small displays

In mature form, T. diguetii presents as a living sculpture with its bulbous base transitioning to numerous wavy, contorted leaves approximately 10cm long. Each leaf emerges from the pseudobulb and gracefully curls back upon itself, creating a mesmerizing spiral effect. The dense covering of whitish trichomes gives the plant a silvery-gray appearance, occasionally developing a pinkish blush in strong light. Unlike many Tillandsias, the inflorescence lacks a tall flower stalk, instead producing its striking violet-magenta blooms nestled within the center of the rosette, with contrasting yellow stamens creating a dramatic color display.

Collector's Note: Named for French botanist Léon Diguet, who collected the type specimen near Manzanillo, this species represents a fascinating chapter in botanical exploration. For decades, T. diguetii was known only from herbarium specimens until its rediscovery by bromeliad researchers. Its native habitat in the seasonally dry tropical forests of Mexico's Pacific coast has informed our cultivation techniques, allowing us to offer these rare specimens to discerning collectors.

Care Requirements:

  • Bright, filtered light—morning sun is beneficial, but protect from harsh midday exposure
  • Allow to dry completely between waterings—thorough soaking 2-3 times weekly, ensuring it dries within hours
  • Excellent air circulation is essential—never leave standing water in the bulbous base
  • Mount horizontally or at a slight angle to prevent water accumulation in the center
  • Benefits from occasional diluted fertilizer during growing season

Ideal For:

  • Serious Tillandsia collectors seeking rare botanical treasures
  • Enthusiasts of unusual plant morphology and adaptation
  • Collectors specializing in Mexican endemic species
  • Those who appreciate slow-growing, architectural specimens

Display Recommendations: Mount on a small piece of cork bark or weathered branch to showcase its sculptural form. Its compact size makes it perfect for desktop displays or small wall arrangements where its unique silhouette can be appreciated up close. Consider positioning it where its frosted appearance will catch morning light, highlighting the silvery trichomes.

Add this botanical rarity to your collection and own a piece of bromeliad history. With its captivating curly form and fascinating rediscovery story, T. diguetii offers not just beauty but a connection to the vanishing dry tropical forests of coastal Mexico—a living treasure that bridges art and science in one exquisite package.
