Tillandsia 'Gorgon' (T. streptophylla x T. pseudobaileyi)

A true collector's piece - Tillandsia 'Gorgon' - a air plant hybrid created by hybridizer Mark Dimmitt. It was made crossing the twisted-leaved Tillandsia streptophylla with the robust Tillandsia pseudobaileyi. The result is a plant of exceptional beauty and character.

The 'Gorgon' forms a mature, bulbous-based rosette that can reach up to 40cm (16") in diameter and 35cm (14") in height. Its thick, gray-green leaves curl and twist in a sculptural, almost Medusa-like fashion, giving the plant its mythical namesake. The hybrid leaves slightly toward its pseudobaileyi parent in overall appearance, but the streptophylla influence "beefs it up" and provides more vibrant color in the bloom.

When it flowers, the 'Gorgon' produces an intermediate, compound inflorescence that blushes a beautiful pink, with tubular purple flowers emerging. This spectacular bloom display makes it a true showstopper during the flowering season. Grown in higher light, the plant can also develop stunning reddish-purple blushing on its foliage. 

Care Instructions: Provide bright, indirect light. Water infrequently but thoroughly. As a general rule, a plant in a hot position will require watering every 2-3 days, while a plant in a cooler, more humid environment may only need watering once a week. This can be achieved by misting or dunking the plant. When dunking, submerge it in a bowl of water for 10-20 minutes, then shake off excess water and place upside down to dry. Ensure the plant dries out completely between waterings and never allow water to sit at the base, as this will cause rot.
