Tillandsia ‘Houston’ Purple. This exceptional hybrid, created by renowned hybridizer Mark A. Dimmitt in the 1980s, has captivated enthusiasts for decades. It is the result of a cross between Tillandsia stricta and Tillandsia recurvifolia (often referred to as Tillandsia meridionalis), combining the vigor and rosette form of T. stricta with the stunning silvery coloration of T. recurvifolia.

The ‘Houston’ Purple forms a symmetrical rosette of long, slender, bright silvery-green leaves that curve gracefully outward, creating a beautiful, almost glowing appearance. One of the larger-sized Tillandsias, it grows more impressively than either parent species. A key feature of this plant is its color-changing nature: as it prepares to bloom, the center of the rosette and the leaves take on a silvery-purple hue.

When it flowers, the ‘Houston’ Purple produces a dense, bright pink inflorescence (ranging from light to dark pink depending on the variety), from which emerge delicate, funnel-shaped flowers in shades of light purple, violet, lilac, or white. The violet tubular flowers emerge from the center of the rosette, providing a contrast to the silvery foliage.

Care Instructions: Provide very bright, indirect light for optimal growth. It can tolerate some early morning or late afternoon sun, but avoid harsh, direct midday sunlight. Mist the plant 2–3 times per week or soak it occasionally. When soaking, submerge the plant in a bowl of water for 10–20 minutes, then shake off excess water.
