Tillandsia recurvifolia var subsecudifolia

A truly unique air plant - Tillandsia recurvifolia var. subsecundifolia. This semi-rare and highly collectible species hails from the southern regions of Brazil, specifically the state of Parana near Vila Velha. For years, its taxonomy has been a subject of debate among botanists - it has been classified as a variety of T. recurvifolia, considered a synonym of Tillandsia leonamiana, and even elevated to its own species Tillandsia subsecundifolia. Regardless of its name, the plants beauty is undeniable.

The plant forms an erect, somewhat secund rosette of numerous, stiff, dark grey-green leaves. The foliage is succulent, velvety, and silver, a clear indication of its xeric (drought-adapted) nature. When mature, it produces a bright orange inflorescence that emerges from the clump, bearing approximately 4 to 6 small, white flowers. Some forms may also exhibit pinkish bracts with blue flowers or a pale violet suffusion on the petals. After flowering, the plant produces many offsets and will quickly form a large, impressive clump.

This plant is commonly known as the "Ball" air plant in Portuguese (Tillandsia "bola") because colonies grow into large, spherical forms though the juxtaposition of the upward-facing, shell-like rosettes.

Care Instructions: Provide bright light for optimal growth and flowering. This species will thrive in strong, filtered light. It can tolerate some direct sunlight, which will intensify the coloration of the bracts. Water by thoroughly misting or dunking the plant in a bowl of water for up to 20 minutes. Air plants must dry out completely between waterings.
