Named after Jack Roth, an avid Southern California plant collector, this beautiful airplant is a true gem of the Tillandsia world.
Key Features:
- Large, impressive size, reaching 30-40 cm wide and 20-30 cm high
- Striking yellow-green leaves that can blush to cherry red
- Spectacular, long-lasting inflorescence with vibrant colors
- Rare in its natural habitat due to environmental changes
Tillandsia rothii is a magnificent species that grows along the west coast of Mexico, from Puerto Vallarta southward. This epiphyte thrives in woods where summertime temperatures are hot and rain is scarce, making it a challenge to find without blemishes in the wild.
The plant forms a rosette of long, broad, and attenuate leaves that are slightly recurving. Unlike its relative T. xerographica, the leaves of T. rothii don't often twist, giving it a distinct appearance. The leaf surface is unique, with the upper (adaxial) side being nerved and minutely appressed-lepidote, while the lower (abaxial) surface is subglabrous.
When in bloom, T. rothii puts on a spectacular show. The inflorescence is compound with inflated spikes, showcasing a stunning combination of cherry, moss green, and buttercup yellow colors. The scape bracts, primary bracts, and even some leaves gradually become a brilliant dark cherry. The flowers themselves are a pale shade of sea foam, creating a beautiful contrast.
Collector's Note: This species is believed to be a natural hybrid, possibly resulting from introgression between T. roland-gosselinii and T. jaliscomonticola. Its rarity in the wild makes cultivated specimens particularly valuable.
Care Tips: Provide bright light to encourage the characteristic blushing. Water thoroughly but allow to dry between waterings. Good air circulation is essential. In shadier locations, the plant will remain more yellow-green and grow more slowly.
Ideal for:
- Collectors seeking a showstopping, large Tillandsia
- Those who appreciate color-changing airplants
- Enthusiasts looking for a challenging but rewarding species
- Growers who can provide bright light and good air circulation
Display Recommendation: Mount on a piece of driftwood or place in a large, shallow dish to showcase its impressive size and allow for color development.
Add this rare beauty to your collection and witness the spectacular color show of one of the most impressive Tillandsias in cultivation.
