The Vriesea 'Red Chestnut': This iconic cultivar of Vriesea fosteriana var. seideliana has been a favorite among bromeliad enthusiasts for decades, prized for its breathtaking foliage and remarkable ease of care.
Often listed as Vriesea fosteriana 'Red Chestnut', this plant was originally discovered by the renowned German horticulturist Seidel and has been in cultivation since at least the 1970s. It is celebrated for its distinctive, reticulated (net-like) leaf pattern: a large, open, arching rosette of glossy green leaves banded with irregular, bright chestnut-red transverse markings, all overlaid with creamy-white geometric stripes. As the leaves mature, they take on a rich, rusty red cast, creating a stunning tapestry of greens, creams, and deep reds.
Caring for Your Plant:
Bright, indirect light or partial shade. An east- or west-facing window is ideal. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. It tolerates low light levels better than many bromeliads.
Keep the central "cup" (tank) filled about 1/4 full with fresh water. Flush the reservoir with fresh water weekly to prevent stagnation, odor, and mosquito breeding. Water the potting mix sparingly—only when the top 1–2 inches are completely dry. Never allow the potting mix to remain wet.
