The Vriesea ‘Sherlette Shiigi’. This magnificent hybrid was created by renowned breeder David Shiigi in 1984 and named after his wife, Sherlette. A cross between Vriesea fosteriana ‘Red Chestnut’ and Vriesea ‘Hawaiian Sunset’, this bromeliad combines the very best traits of its parents.
The plant forms a medium to large upright rosette with many leaves. Its foliage is heavily tesselated (marked with a mosaic-like pattern) in the outer, older growth, while the newer growth is flushed in beautiful pinkish tones over a white base. The leaves are red-tipped and apiculate (ending in a short, sharp point). These intricate, hieroglyphic-like markings and the vibrant pink to bronze blush make it a true standout.
A medium to large grower, Vriesea ‘Sherlette Shiigi’ typically reaches 20″–24″ at maturity. However, when given a spacious pot and a slow-release fertilizer at the root base, it can grow even larger. It produces a simple inflorescence that can reach up to 42″ in height.
Care Instructions:
Provide bright, filtered light for the most vibrant colors. Stronger light enhances the pink and bronze hues. While it can adapt to a somewhat shady location, optimal color development requires good light. Water moderately, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. As a tank bromeliad, keep the central cup filled with fresh water, flushing it periodically to prevent stagnation.
